| Description | [Despite all the attention paid to religion these days, most Americans are woefully illiterate about their own religion, much less their neighbor's. In this study group, we will work together to learn about many of the religions practiced in America today (Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism primarily). In each case, we will look at how the religion started and grew; what teachings and/or writings it is based upon; and how the religion is commonly practiced today. This study group could be subtitled: "Everything You Wanted to Know about Religion but were Afraid to Ask." Students will have reading assignments between sessions, and should be prepared to participate actively and respectfully in class discussions. We will have clergy, lay-people, and Voyagers members as guests to share and explain their own religious practices and rituals. ] |
