Description [Epic poems appear in many cultures and languages, and are referenced in current literature, movies, plays, news reporting, etc. The class will discuss the epic form in general, and read and discuss Beowulf (translated by Seamus Heaney) in full. In addition, we will read sections of other epics which may include The Illiad, Morte D'Arthur, Sir Gawaine and the Green Knight, Gilgamesh, etc.]
