Teacher Name ChristinaKennedy
Target Age Range 10 - 13
General Grade Level Upper Elementary, Middle School
Ability Level
Skill Requirements/Prerequisites Kids must have the ability and desire to read these books and be in the group. They also need to be able to commit to finishing reading to whatever point I specify in order to take part fully in the discussion the following week. I'll keep parents apprised as to where we are in each book, and if the book list changes at all for any reason.
Book Title

Family Provided Materials Kids must have a copy of the books we are reading when we are reading them--can be library books as long as they can have them checked out as we are discussing them. Email me before the fall session starts if you want to buy paperback copies for your kids--I have free shipping with Amazon and am happy to make use of it! Michelle S. will be looking for yard sale copies.
Instructor Provided Materials
Study Group Style Discussion, Activity
Description We will read one book over a two week period and discuss them as a group (the kids will talk, I'll ask some leading questions). Outside reading will be necessary. Most weeks we'll have some sort of activity to go along with the books (e.g., playing with pentominoes and doing something with blue M&Ms for Chasing Vermeer). The books will likely be Chasing Vermeer (Balliett), Dave at Night (Levine--the author of Ella Enchanted), The City of Ember (DuPrau), Freaky Friday (Rodgers), Hatchet (Paulsen), Surviving the Applewhites (Tolan--about homeschoolers!), and one more if there is time. These books are all considered to be about 5th grade to 8th grade in both reading level and content. If your child has already read most of the books, please let me know and I'll finagle the list a bit. There are lots of great choices for kids at this level out there!
