| Description | We will read one book over a two week period and discuss them as a group (the kids will talk, I'll ask some leading questions). Outside reading will be necessary. Most weeks we'll have some sort of activity to go along with the books (e.g., playing with pentominoes and doing something with blue M&Ms for Chasing Vermeer). The books will likely be Chasing Vermeer (Balliett), Dave at Night (Levine--the author of Ella Enchanted), The City of Ember (DuPrau), Freaky Friday (Rodgers), Hatchet (Paulsen), Surviving the Applewhites (Tolan--about homeschoolers!), and one more if there is time. These books are all considered to be about 5th grade to 8th grade in both reading level and content. If your child has already read most of the books, please let me know and I'll finagle the list a bit. There are lots of great choices for kids at this level out there! |
