This is a study group for those who really need to learn high-school math,
but have not had such a great time with math in the past. The exact material
to be covered will depend on the needs of the students, but the focus will be on what you
need to know for tests like the SAT: elementary algebra and geometry, and how to use them
to conquer those little demons known as "word problems". If anyone needs to review the trickier
parts of arithmetic, like fractions and decimals, we can do that as well, but please try at least to
have your multiplication tables memorized before starting this group!
To keep the group from being unremittingly tedious, I also plan to discuss some of the odd
and interesting bits of math that you probably won't find on standardized tests: dimensions (1, 2, 3, and more),
infinities (yes, there are different infinities), fractals, and who knows what else?
Because being able to do math is often as much a matter of practice as of understanding,
you should expect to do several hours of work at home for each hour spent in class. If you really
do the work, you should find that understanding actually grows out of the practice. |
