Math Club

Date(s) - January 31, 2020

Math club is a fun and social activity for middle and high school age students interested in learning math. Participants will work to develop intuitive thinking skills and learn new types of math beyond the basics. Students will also apply math learned elsewhere to fun and challenging problems with an eye toward thinking of math as creative enjoyable experience. Math club is a great way to meet others interested in the subject, and peek behind the curtain to see types of math other than algebra and calculus. Topics will vary depending on the interests of the group and where natural inquiry takes us.

Participants should be roughly middle and high school aged, though exceptions will be made based on interest and ability. We never want to turn away a fellow math enthusiast, but we don’t want to put them in over their heads and have them lose their love of the subject either!

About the Instructor

Matthew Coleman is a current Voyagers member and homeschooling high school student who is passionate about math. As a dual-enrollment student, Matthew is currently a Supplemental Instruction Leader for Calculus I at Middlesex Community College. His interest in the subject has literally led him around the world, having recently returned from The Ross Mathematics Program in Asia where he studied number theory and learned to “think deeply about simple things.” Matthew enjoys presenting fellow homeschoolers with new and interesting problems as they explore mathematics through a different lens.
