In this interactive course, students will learn to access, analyze, evaluate, act on and create media, and develop the critical skills needed to wisely navigate the ever-growing media landscape. We will watch several Crash Course Media Literacy episodes and other short videos on relevant topics together, do some engaging activities, and have lively discussions. In addition to Crash Course, we will explore the digital artifacts, videos and interactives on Newseum.org, an award-winning site that hosts an extensive collection of educational content which teaches media literacy grounded in the rights secured by the First Amendment. Students will tackle the challenges of identifying bias, fair reporting, fake news and propaganda, as well as the persuasive techniques and logical fallacies used in advertising and staying safe while using social media.
